For the past six months, Magnus Gjoen has immersed himself in the world of Ukiyo‑e; the vivid woodblock prints of Japan’s Edo period, created to celebrate life’s fleeting pleasures and the beauty of impermanence. In this new work, Gjoen turns that tradition on its head. Hand‑drawn and printed on delicate Kozo paper, he replaces serene landscapes with the shocking spectacle of a nuclear blast - a stark emblem of power, fragility and the consequences of human ambition. By colliding the refinement of Edo artistry with the brutality of modern warfare, Gjoen invites us to confront the narrow divide between creation and destruction. The piece becomes both a meditation on beauty and a necessary reminder: devastation on this scale must never be repeated.
